Scanning Services

FOR FILMMAKERS — HISTORIC & MODERN

Analog Film Stock offers professional film scanning services for filmmakers working with their own footage — whether you’re preserving historic reels or actively shooting on 16mm today.

This service grew out of our in-house scanning lab, originally built to support documentary production at Slate & Glass. Every reel we scan is treated with the same care, restraint, and respect we apply to our own films.

This is a filmmaker-focused service — designed for real projects, real delivery, and real storytelling.

WHAT WE SCAN

We currently work with:

  • 8mm & Super 8

  • 16mm

  • Color and black & white

  • Silent and sound film (when applicable)

Whether your footage was shot decades ago or last month, our approach remains the same: preserve the integrity of the original image while preparing it for modern post-production workflows.

FOR HISTORIC & LEGACY FOOTAGE

If you’re working with archival material — family films, regional history, documentary archives, or institutional collections — we focus on preservation first.

Our process prioritizes:

  • Maintaining original framing and exposure

  • Respecting grain, contrast, and texture

  • Avoiding aggressive cleanup or artificial “modernization”

  • Delivering files that remain faithful to the source

Historic film carries context and responsibility. We handle it accordingly.

FOR FILMMAKERS STILL SHOOTING ON 16MM

If you’re actively shooting on 16mm, we treat your footage as part of a living production — not as material to be flattened or standardized.

Our scanning workflow is designed to:

  • Preserve the full frame at the film’s native aspect ratio

  • Deliver files suitable for professional editing and color workflows

  • Retain maximum flexibility for finishing, grading, and reframing

  • Integrate seamlessly with modern digital footage

We scan film the way we want our own footage scanned — clean, honest, and ready to cut.

STANDARD DELIVERY FORMAT

All film scanning projects are delivered using our standard scan format unless otherwise requested:

  • Resolution: 4K (4000 × 3000)

  • Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (native full frame)

  • Codec: H.265 (HEVC)

This preserves the entire image area of the original film while keeping files efficient and usable in modern workflows.

PRORES 4444 DELIVERY

For projects requiring maximum image latitude, ProRes 4444 delivery is available at an additional fee of $500 per reel.

This option is recommended for:

  • Heavy color grading or restoration

  • Long-form documentary finishing

  • Broadcast or archival preservation

  • Visual effects or compositing workflows

Delivery format is discussed per project based on your needs.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We don’t believe film should be over-corrected or stripped of its character.

Grain stays grain.
Movement stays organic.
Imperfections stay human.

Our role is not to reinterpret the image — but to preserve it and make it usable for today’s storytellers.
